It’s difficult trying to think about things to write about socks. Socks are often relegated to the lower divisions of clothing chitty chat. Coats and the shoes get all the glamour press whereas socks barely get a mention in the local free rag. Sock Council are changing that and putting socks back where they belong; on your feet!

So what interesting things do I have to say about socks? I like socks, that’s for sure. However, I can’t really think of any sock related events that are worthy of recounting in cyberspace. I wonder if astronauts have specially designed cosmic socks to keep their varicose veins from exploding? Who invented the sock? Probably some Celtic tribe four thousand years ago maybe. Can vegans eat socks? Did you the word ‘sock’ is an anagram of ‘coks’? No my own sock story is pretty mundane. Where I live, in Runcorn on the Mersey estuary, there used to be a massive ICI chlorine plant. There’s still a massive chlorine plant but it’s now owned by eco-rapist, Jim Radcliffe and his INEOS chemicals conglomerate.

Runcorn was and still is to a degree an ‘ICI Town’ and prior to becoming a new town and welcoming 35,000 migrant scousers from across the Mersey with open arms in the 70s, most of the male population were employed either at ICI itself or industries linked to it; the salt works, the docks, the tugs and so on. My dad worked at Weston Point docks and Weston Salt Union had their yard at the same location, salt being used in vast amounts for the production of chlorine and transported via the Weaver canal from the salt mines in Northwich and Winsford.

This interlinked industrial connectivity also manifested itself in items of clothing and one such icon of my youth was the ‘ICI Sock.’ These socks were knitted from a wool mix with the same pinkish hue and taste of three week old corned beef hash. They were thick and warm and perfect for winter days spent playing three and in em for hours on end in the garages. ICI socks were handed down from father to son like medals from the Boer War, they were cherished items, adored and even worshipped.

The great God, Chlorine had furnished the people of the town with prosperity and lung disease and for this the god demanded sacrifice. We offered our first born sons and they gave us warm socks and cancer. I don’t even know how me dad had pairs of em – maybe he traded them for some knock off whiskey or a jar of precious unguents from the Orient, any way I’d swipe them from the airing cupboard whenever the outside (and sometimes the inside) temperature required. They may not have looked funky and fashionable but fuck they were warm.

Still, as I look around TK Maxx in search of affordable sock wear that isn’t either minor brand diffusion line bull crap or self-consciously Jon Snow ‘eccentric’ I’m glad Sock Council have filled the massive foot shaped void in my life. Now, hopefully they’ll drop all this football nonsense and get around to doing an ‘Industrial’ range, in pink ofcourse.

Happy Friday everyone, the weekend is almost upon us!

The tune I’ve chosen to get your weekend started right is Mystery of Love by Fingers Inc. Fingers Inc is a group formed in 1985 in Chicago and consisted of Larry Heard (Mr Fingers) on production and Robert Owens and Ron Wilson on vocals. They released one album in 1988, Another Side, and then sadly disbanded. Both Heard and Owens went on to release various classic House tunes in the 80’s and 90’s though, well worth checking if you aren’t familiar with their work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhJv6qBOZbw
The first time I heard this, I’d bought The House Sound of Chicago Volume I from Woolworths. It was 1987 and I was 15. Jack Your Body had gotten to number 1 earlier that year, and these new sounds had me gripped. Hip Hop was already established, now there was something new to dance to. It had already started to go overground, and with House music it felt different like something very new was happening, the rest of course is history. Still can’t believe I was getting in nightclubs at that age, probably explains why I did so well at school :D.

Mystery of Love is for me THE greatest House tune of all time, I never ever get sick of hearing it. A track just filled with memories, odd I only ever heard it played once on a night out, John Kelly played it at the (infamous) Quadrant Park all nighter, still remember it clear as bell, 1990, blew me away. Happy Daze.

Enjoy!

You can listen to Ally Al’s ace mixes here!

We recently caught up Anthony Higgins, author of a new book about Spanish football and here he gives us a synopsis of what the book is all about:

I have been going to football matches for well over 30 years, primarily Newcastle United, and had always wanted to write a book about my experiences.

Whilst researching for a regular feature that I do, for Newcastle fanzine True faith, called The Real Spain, I discovered a fan owned and very atypical football club, called CAP Ciudad de Murcia. It soon dawned on me that I had the perfect opportunity to write about football and my growing disillusionment with the modern game. It also gave me a chance to write about general life in Spain and the history and customs of what is a fascinating country.

I travelled far and wide, to every corner of the Region of Murcia and further afield to places as diverse as Gibraltar and Bilbao.

On my travels I saw some good football and some downright bad football, but all of that was only a backdrop. The people on the terraces took precedence over the players on the pitch but that has always been the way for me. I met some great people along the way from a wide range of places like Dublin, Manchester, London, Bilbao, Cadiz, Seville and many other places. All of these people had interesting stories to tell.

Along the way, I uncovered some lost football history, about the pioneers that had brought football to Murcia, none more so than the Geordie Spaniard, Manny Pelegr

This track is one of the reasons I love hip hop. The humour, wordplay and subject matter of it just address issues you don’t really get in other genres of music. Although ‘Keeping it real’ is a well worn phrase in hip hop, there are lots of MCs out there that still use ghost writers for their lyrics. Ghostwriter sees Skillz naming and shaming these artists on the mic, but their names have been bleeped out on the original. For legal reasons, no doubt. For me this just adds to Ghostwriters mystique, as even though it is well over a decade since it’s release, there are still only a number of the names that have been worked out from videos of his live shows, where he pulls no punches. I’ll include both the original and the live track for you here. Some of the names are wont come as a shock to you though. Unfortunately Skillz has retired from recording albums and just tends to MC for Jazzy Jeff and do his yearly rap up tune these days. Fingers crossed this is only temporary, as the man is one of the best.

Yo

For today’s Monday tune I offer “All The Love Of The Universe” by Santana. From their 4th studio album released in 1972 Caravanserai. I’m in no way musically talented, can’t play a note, but I’ve never understood Santana’s detractors when it comes to his guitar playing ( Frank Zappa had a real issue with him apparently ). I can’t argue the technicalities of it obviously, but it always sounded fantastic to me. He always seemed to play with real emotion and I’ve no doubt he was massively influential ( If Prince isn’t a fan I’ll eat my own 6″ purple high heels ) Anyways back to the music, Santana’s playing aside just listen to the rhythm section, Michael Shrieve on drums and Douglas Rach on bass ( His first album with the group ) absolutely amazing ! Like the song say “Everybody needs a helping hand” it’s nice to be nice. Have a good week brothers and sisters, enjoy !

You can listen to a back catalogue of Ally’s mixes here, I recommend you do!

For me Prince dominated the 80’s, his recordings from 78 to 90 still get more play from me than any other artist ( Stevie and Bowie are not far behind mind, but that’s a post for another Monday ) I’d always been a fan of the track 1999, they used to play it all the time at the open air swimming pool at Southport, that and Super Freak ( which I also still love to this day ) Anyways, I digress the following year When Doves Cry was released, the first single from Purple Rain, the album that propelled Prince into global superstardom, I loved Doves and would play it over and over again, then out of curiosity one day I decided to play the B-Side, a track called 17 Days. As soon as the guitar solo at the beginning started my mind was blown. It made no sense to my 12 year old mind, how could the B-Side be as good, maybe even better than the A-Side?? The next single Lets Go Crazy then had Erotic City as B-Side, a pattern was beginning to emerge, every release had something extra to look forward to. The albums were brilliant, the singles were brilliant and the B-sides were just as brilliant ! Shockadelica, She’s Always In My Hair, Hello, Love or Money, Alexa De Paris etc etc

The tune I’ve chosen for your Monday morning is the B-side to Sign O’The Times “La, La, La, He, He Hee” The extended 12″ version. Just under 11 minutes of quirky 1987 Purple Funk enjoy

You can find a lot of the songs I’ve mentioned in two of my Prince mixes “12”s of Funk Volumes 1 and 2 – B-sides Remixes and Extended Versions “, here and here.

Asking me to be positive on a Sunday evening/Monday morning is a huge stretch but massively flattered by R asking me to do this. I’ll endeavour to bring you some musical goodness every Sunday/Monday, some tunes you’ll be familiar with, others maybe not so much.

https://youtu.be/y0tyAHoJEyo
Kicking off with one of my favourite Sly and the Family Stone tracks. The title track from their 4th studio album released in 1969 Stand !
